Dear Businessperson:

I am writing to request your help for an U.S. Citizen that is unjustly imprisoned in the Peoples' Republic of China.

Jude Shao is an American businessman who has been imprisoned in Shanghai's Qing Pu prison since April of 1998. As you can see from the attached Case Summary, Jude was held in prison for 26 months before trial and then was convicted and given a 16-year sentence for tax evasion based on evidence that he was not allowed to review. Once Jude was given the opportunity to review the evidence, he discovered errors so great that any impartial judicial system would exonerate him. Recently six Chinese legal scholars in Beijing reviewed Jude's case and concluded there was insufficient evidence to convict him. Yet because of political considerations, his appeals have been rejected and he remains in prison.

What has happened to Jude Shao could happen to anyone trying to do business in China. The lack of the rule of law, biased enforcement of laws by the Police, settlement of business disputes through criminal cases and corrupt local officials make for a very hazardous environment for American business. We are asking for your assistance in correcting the wrong perpetrated against Jude Shao as well as improving the environment for foreign investment in China.

Jude has exhausted whatever judicial process is available to him in China. His last hope is for American businesspeople to express an interest in his case and thereby encourage the Chinese to review Jude's case again.

We are writing to request that you write a letter or speak in person with any Chinese businessmen or officials you know. Simply providing your Chinese contacts with copies of the Case Summary and Case Verification Report (available in Chinese) and asking them to inquire about the case will be extremely helpful in moving Jude's case forward.
